Vantaa – Hämeenlinna – Tampere
Start your car journey towards Hämeenlinna, a small charming city located about hundred kilometers from Vantaa.
OPTIONAL: Visit Hämeen Linna – the Häme Castle in English, a medieval castle where the whole city gets its name from. The Häme Castle and its redbrick barracks are on the shore of Lake Vanajavesi and it is believed to have been built at the end of the 13th century as a residence for mighty nobles. The castle and its surroundings have a long history as a fortress, granary and latest as a prison use from 1837 to 1972. Check the daily opening hours from here.
OPTIONAL: Visit Aulanko Nature Reserve. The Aulanko area in Hämeenlinna has been a popular destination with visitors for more than a hundred years. Nowadays, there is a lot to see in Aulanko Nature Reserve, in addition to the beautiful scenery: the forest park of Aulanko, its sights, and the view from the scenic lookout tower of Aulangonvuori Hill over the national landscape. There is an asphalt-surfaced one-way ring road, which goes round the nature reserve. Driving is allowed from 8 am to 11 pm on this road. There are five parking areas along the ring road, we suggest stopping at the one closest to the scenic lookout tower and walking to the tower to enjoy the best views. After enjoying the views, drive towards the Hotel Aulanko (Address: Aulangontie 93) for some lunch with amazing views over the Vanajavesi lake.
Your next destination will be Tampere, Finland’s third largest city and the largest inland city in Scandinavia. Drive to your hotel, Sokos Hotel Ilves or similar (we will confirm your hotel after your booking) and check in. In the evening we suggest a short walk to admire the Tammerkoski rapids, the old industrial buildings from the city’s past and the lively city center. Tampere has many nice restaurants for dinner. If you are feeling exceptionally brave, you can try the local delicacy, the “black sausage” – a blood sausage served with lingonberry jam.

Day at Tampere
We suggest starting your day driving to Pyynikki and Pispala. Pyynikki, one of the Tampere neighbourhoods, is home to a gorgeous pine tree forest on top of a ridge. Park the car and take a break in the cafe of the old granite Pyynikki watchtower and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and a delicious doughnut.
Continue your journey on foot west along the ridge and you’ll soon be in Pispala. With its narrow streets, beautifully restored wooden houses and magnificent views towards the two large lakes, Pispala is one of the most popular Sunday promenade destinations and residential areas. Protected by a building plan, the unique village-like neighbourhood is home to thousands of families.
After a refreshing walk, head back to your car and drive towards the Särkänniemi amusement park area, where you can visit Näsinneula, the second tallest observation tower in the Nordic countries. You can see a fantastic panorama of the city centre from the tower’s observation deck or why not even have lunch in the tower’s rotating restaurant.
The newest attraction of Tampere, the world’s only Moomin museum will be opened in June 2017. There is an unique collection of Tove Jansson works exhibited in a modern, multi-sensory way. A new Tove Jansson Library will comprise all of the different language versions of the original Moomin books and the entrance hall will include a high-standard shop with mainly Moomin-themed products.
In the afternoon, you can visit the Museum Centre Vapriikki (closed on Mondays), located inside an old red brick factory building right by the rapids of Tammerkoski. Vapriikki has lots to explore; there’s a Shoe Museum, a Natural History Museum, a Toy Museum, a Post Museum, an Ice Hockey Museum, as well as changing exhibitions. The Finnish Labour Museum Werstas is based in the historical Finlayson cotton mill area in the heart of Tampere. At Werstas you can visit the Labour Museum’s exhibitions, Textile Industry Museum and Steam Engine Museum for free admission.
Before dinner, we suggest taking a cocktail break in Hotel Torni Tampere’s sky bar located on the 25th floor with amazing views over the Tampere region.

Tampere – Iittala – Helsinki-Vantaa airport
After check out, head to Iittala, 60 kilometres from Tampere towards Helsinki. The story of Iittala began in 1881 when a glass factory was founded in the village of Iittala. The factory is still operating, and many famous designers, amongst them Tapio Wirkkala, Kaj Frank, and Timo Sarpaneva, have worked at the factory. Nowadays almost every Finnish household has some Iittala dishes in their kitchens.
You can visit The Iittala Glass Museum, Iittala Outlet and other shops. The spacious outlet holds assortments from all of the Finnish trademarks of the Fiskars Corporation including Iittala, Arabia, Fiskars itself, and Hackman. A Tax Free and export service enables sending your purchase home abroad easily.
For lunch, you can have something in Iittala’s Lasimäen Ravintola restaurant or try something typically Finnish and stop in a local gas station complex along your way to Helsinki. Many of them have also buffet restaurants and food shops, located conveniently near the highway exits.
After lunch, head towards the Helsinki-Vantaa airport and return your rental car.
