Helsinki, the capital of Finland has four different seasons, the winter season usually starts in November or December and goes on until March. The long light days of summer gradually change into cooler, shorter days and eventually the sun rises above the horizon only for a few hours each day. After sunset, you can experience the magical “blue hour”, the moment when the sun is slightly below the horizon, leaving the sky deep blue. Later in the winter the sea surrounding Helsinki and its many islands freezes over and the town is covered in snow.

Also worth visiting is the old restored Market Hall (closed on Sundays), the Senate Square and the majestic Helsinki Cathedral, just one block north from the Market Square.

Helsinki Panorama Sightseeing tour 11.00-12.45

An audio guided (several languages including English, Chinese and Japanese) Helsinki Panorama Sightseeing city tour starts from Fabianinkatu Street tourist bus stopin the middle of the Esplanade Park. Please arrive to the tourist bus stop 15 minutes before the tour departure and show your Helsinki Card to the attendant. The comfortable double decker tour bus is air conditioned and heated (during winter) and has a free Wi-Fi. During the approximately 1, 5 hour city tour you will drive past the main sights of Helsinki and hear interesting stories behind them. There will be a short stop at the famous Temppeliaukio Church, excavated in rock as well as the Sibelius Monument before the tour ends at the Esplanade Park. Please note, that the entrance fee to Temppeliaukio church is not included  (3 euros/ person, to be paid on the spot).

OPTIONAL: Visit Suomenlinna. After the sightseeing tour, walk the short distance to the Market Square where the ferry for one of Finland’s UNESCO World Heritage Sights, Suomenlinna Sea Fortress leaves (use your Helsinki Card for a free ferry ride). Suomenlinna is actually a district of Helsinki with year-round inhabitants but it also has a long history as maritime fortress that has served in the defense of three different nations: Sweden, Russia and Finland. You can access the island only by water, the ferry ride over takes approximately 15-20 minutes and gives you the perfect opportunity to enjoy Helsinki from the sea perspective and snap some photos too. You can download a brochure of the island in advance (9 different language choices) from here to plan your visit. At this point of the day, you might be ready for some food, we suggest having lunch on the island, for example at Suomenlinna Brewery or Café Chapman.  Take the ferry back to the mainland (free with your Helsinki card).

OPTIONAL: Visit Helsinki Icepark. If you want to try something new, the Icepark just next to the Helsinki main Railway Station offers the possibility to try ice skating (ice skate rental possible for an extra charge), something that local people really enjoy during the winter. If you don’t feel braving the ice, you can sit down in the adjoining café to admire people skating by and having something typical for a Finnish winter: Glögi – a mulled wine drink.

Walk back to your hotel and overnight.

DAY 3

Breakfast at the hotel

Full buffet breakfast at your hotel, free time to explore Helsinki on your own.

OPTIONAL: Sightseeing by tram. The tram makes a full circle so you can ride around Helsinki and see the local people in their daily lives while sitting comfortably in the warm tram.

Guided sightseeing with Nordic walking sticks 12.00-14.00

You will experience something very Finnish – a guided city nature sightseeing with Nordic walking sticks. Nordic walking was invented in Finland and developed to provide off-season training for the Finnish cross-country ski team. The Töölönlahti Bay area is beautiful and quiet area of fauna, flora and history of Finland.

Coffee break at Café Esplanad

For snack or maybe as a dessert after lunch or dinner you can try something very typically Finnish: a “Korvapuusti” cinnamon bun with a cup of coffee or tea at traditional coffee shop Café Esplanad (Address: Pohjois-Esplanadi 37, open daily until 21.00 hrs).

OPTIONAL: Museum visit. As your Helsinki Card includes free entrance to several of Helsinki’s museums, we recommend visiting at least one of them, maybe the Design Museum for local design, Ateneum for some Finnish art or Kiasma for some modern art? Check the selection and opening hours from here
