This tour will introduce you to two different cities of Finland. Helsinki, the beautiful capital located by the Baltic Sea, is a combination of a bustling metropolis and a relaxed small town. With its good services, great public transportation and easy access to the nature it is a perfect destination for a short city break.

Tampere, Finland’s third largest city and the largest inland city in Scandinavia, is sandwiched between the lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. Tampere has a monumental industrial history: the Finlayson cotton mill was the first large-scale industrial enterprise in Finland and it was in fact in Finlayson’s factory hall that the first electric light in the Nordic countries was lit.

Arrival to Tampere and guided sightseeing walk

Arrival to Tampere Railway Station around 11.00, where you will meet your local Tampere guide at the platform with a sign “Finland Tours”. You will experience something very Finnish – a guided city nature sightseeing with Nordic walking sticks. Nordic walking was invented in Finland and developed to provide off-season training for the Finnish cross-country ski team. You will see the town of Tampere through three towers and three different perspectives. In the old Pyynikki sightseeing tower you are in a unique pine forest, inside a beautiful nature spot just in the middle of the town. On the terrace of Hotel Torni you are in the heart of a modern cultural center and a vivid university town and from the high Näsinneula Tower you see the wide green and blue Nature surrounding the town. The tour takes about 3 hours.

OPTIONAL: After the guided tour you have time to get to know Tampere yourself. Museum Centre Vapriikki (closed on Mondays) is located inside an old red brick factory building right by the rapids of Tammerkoski. Vapriikki has lots to explore; there’s a Shoe Museum, a Natural History Museum, a Toy Museum, a Post Museum, an Ice Hockey Museum, as well as changing exhibitions.

We recommend you do like the locals do and visit the hundred-years-old Tampere Market Hall (Kauppahalli) next to the Central Square to see the local life and explore the delicacy shops. The black sausage, ”mustamakkara” as Finns call it, is a definite must when you’re in Tampere. According to the locals, it tastes the best when enjoyed fresh out of the kiosk with some cold milk.

Train Tampere-Helsinki 17.00-19.00

Return to the Railway Station, where you will take the evening train to Helsinki. Please check the final timings on your train ticket. Overnight in the hotel.
